Comments on: I don’t remember, but looking at the photo it must have been a strange sort of a day. Overcast, yes, but I do not recall such fog coming off the Niagara River as can be seen in the background. After all, it is around 1700 hrs. Not a morning mist.
AMTK 296 as #98, Toronto bound; for some reason this afternoon being assisted by VIA 6423. Of interest this is the unit that would be wrecked at a violent incident in Thamesville, Ontario in April of 1999.
The Budds are overnighting………..they will be out as #636, the morning train to Toronto.

@AW,yes sir it was sad. I can't comment about what you saw in Ottawa or how long after the derailment 6423 was there, but I do remember being at the TMC when I thought about hiring on at VIA after my time at CN and one of the employees showed me the prime mover from 6423. I am not sure what other safety measures could have been taken at Thamesville as the cause was not the fault of the train crew, but the section forces working that day.
Sadly it would be repeated again under different circumstances at Burlington West on February 26, 2012. I lost 2 more colleagues plus an engineer trainee that day :-(

Ouch!! That is sad.
Last I saw of 6423 it was under a tarp at Walkley Yard in Ottawa. I guess they really gave the locomotive a going-over to see if they could improve safety. So it was said.

Great shot. It definitely does not look like this anymore.
I lost 2 friends and colleagues at Thamesville. Strangely enough VIA still has the engine block from that wreck in the VIA Toronto TMC.
