Comments on: I know, whine, whine, whine……….but when I look at images like this I am so disappointed that the landscape cannot be like it used to be. Bayview looks ‘manicured’. That lawn out there, even within the junction itself, looks better than mine. This image was taken on a weekday in July of 1974 but I have no indicated the exact date on my pic, unfortunately. Problem was back then I did not expect the hobby to evolve as it did. I’ve not a record of the two units behind 2558 as it makes it’s way off the Oakville sub westbound toward London. That little building in the right bottom corner always intrigued me. Back then, I thought it was an outhouse. In 1975, vandals tipped it over, and that was the end of it. I never did give it an “inspection”. But seeing this shot, well, there is no window, no exhaust,any of those old railway guys would be gasping and choking in a hurry. So it must have been some sort of communications shack? I never did find out. It has been so long ago now there is nobody to ask. The series 2500-2579, M420s, were renumbered into the 3500 series by end of 1987.

LOL, well Arnold,at the moment I am neither a GO or VIA engineer. Possibly VIA in the spring. In the mean time I will be putting my 36 years of service to good use as I am headed to Botswana to teach classes on the new Progress Rail GT42AC units they are taking delivery of as we speak. I guess these units are light years ahead of the stuff they have now and they have no idea how to work the FIRE system controls for the new units.

A ‘phone shack’ is what I thought too, Mr. GO Engineer, but dismissed it because there is a little phone over by the signal. Thanks for the comments.

Great shot Mr. Mooney. Miss the days of class lights and flags. Luckily I “saved” a couple sets of green and white flags.
As to the shack. I wouldn’t be for a crew change as Bayview was never a designated change point. It may have been used by the signal department. At this time there was not as much radio communication with the train dispatcher and crews, so it may also contain a phone..yea we used to actually the dispatcher on an old rotary phone is shacks like that. Oh for the good old days.

Shacks like this exist in some crew change spots in Ontario to this day, but are a bit more modern (plywood)
