Comments on: I look back through my photos, and it turns out I don’t have a single photo of a Via Rail P42DC. Calling Niagara home, Via P42′s haven’t roamed those rails since 2012, before I even had a DSLR. This rather funky looking wrap isn’t how I’d like to start off, but I guess you gotta start somewhere. While I am not a fan of it, I definitely see potential in a future Via Rail stealth scheme with solid grey and yellow.

A trip east into longitude 78 was overdue. In my younger days, my papa would take me to Newcastle to watch Via trains whip through the curves here at 90mph. I can very vaguely recall the LRC units, but the biggest memory would be the P42′s and their very symphonic horns.

Here, Via 645 rips around the curve at Lovekin with 904 at the helm. To the left, dead as a doornail like usual is the CP Belleville Sub. The CN Kingston Sub was pretty hot though as it usually is. In terms of the very symphonic horns I remember, Transport Canada put a stop to that with the new beast which sticks out like a sore thumb behind the engineer’s window. These horns sound more like a mutant truck from the gates of hell. I guess that gets trespassers out of the way faster…

These Via Rail 150th Canadian anniversary wraps have really sprouted up quickly. I’d see three more on the way back home. As for Lovekin, the stay here was shortlived, as the cold biting wind roaring off of Lake Ontario was pretty nasty.

@Railfanmatt4. No my friend, there will be no scheduled trains on the Grimbsy sub to the best of my knowledge. 271 was an oddity and 523/524 are run when needed, normally 524 brings overflow traffic that 422 can't handle and it runs to either Aldershot or Mac Yrd

@kitchener_railfan. No that is not a regular movement. My boss told me that the one of the railroads needed auto racks and originally 271 would have gone via Sarnia but CN supplied the cars via Chicago so the extra cars were given to NS

Great shot Daniel.

I wish that VIA had come up with their own version of Heritage units like AMtrak did...would be cool for the 150th celebrations this year to see the old VIA blue and yellow don the tracks again :)

Speaking of which...ever think of entering this int the time machine challenge to be paired with sdfourty's photos?

hey ngineerd4u! I was wondering if 524/271 will become scheduled, I've been hearing news of 3 more trains that will start a scheduled service on the Grimsby/Stamford

Great shot Daniel, beautiful lighting.
Its funny, only CPR fans call it Lovkin, we call it Newcastle :-)

Were you out in the Niagara region yesterday? There were at least 14 different railfans in many spots taking pics of my Montreal to Fort Erie E271 auto train yesterday. Then we became 524 at Ft Erie for the ride home.

When I was in Newtonville back on March 7th, I got 118 & 142 about 20 minutes apart that morning. I had arrived about 10-15 mins before I heard a CP horn in the distance. Seems you gotta get out early on the Belleville Sub these days to get any CP action. Nice shot man :)
