Comments on: I was always a joy to snoop out Niagara Falls, and particularly Fort Erie in search of the foreign visitors and the odd locomotives passing thru.
This one was a real surprise. It is a GMDH-1, according to the Spotters’ Guide one of only 4 built, between Dec 55 and Oct 1959.
It laying over on its way from South Amboy NJ to Hudson Bay Oil & Gas, about 125 miles NW of Edmonton, Alberta.
Despite this transfer happening 32 years ago this month, I understand the unit is not only still operational, it is still there.

Of all things to be "digging" about. Thanks, MrDan. I thought it had been in NJ for years.

A bit more digging turned up some info from UCRS newsletter 374: this unit was originally built at GMD demo 800, sold to ERCO, then sold to Limestone Quarries, who sold it to Capital Equipment Ltd, and then it was overhauled at CP's John St. Roundhouse in 1979 and in 1980 sold to Raritan River Steel in Perth Amboy NJ (owned by CO-Steel/LASCO of Whitby). The plant opened in September 1980, so its stay appears to be short-lived, and on the move to a different owner in this December shot.
