Comments on: In 1997 Canadian Pacific had advised it’s intention of no longer operating the Guelph Junction Railway due to continued declining traffic volumes and issued their notice of discontinuance on the Goderich Subdivision at the end of 1997. This left the city of Guelph with having no choice but to find a new operator for the following year. The last day of 1997 was sunny however it was extremely cold. If polar vortex’s would have existed then that day could have been one on it’s own. However the weather didn’t stop history from happening as the CP Guelph local went about its regular duties. The job switched around Guelph Jct. then made a run over to Puslinch to service the customer there before returning to Guelph Jct. After some additional work the crew lifted one hopper car for Owens Corning. There CP GP9u 1614 departed for the final time for Guelph during the mid-afternoon. Here northbound 1614 is seen approaching Concession 11 at “Danger Bell Crossing” in Puslinch Township as it slowly made its way to Guelph.

The "Danger Bell" crossing was pointed out to me the first time I worked up the Goderich line in 1973. For those unaware it was so named because it featured an unusual signal with a crossbuck, bell & illuminated glass panel with the word "Danger" spelled out on it. There was only the one signal, the other side had a typical inanimate crossbuck. The oddball signal was replaced before 1981, with standard flashing lights & bell setup. The removed signal was saved, at least for a time, as it was featured in a Signal Dept display at CP's Family Day at Quebec Street in 1981.
