Comments on: In the absence of proper fueling facilities for steam power, especially later on in the diesel era, cranes or other means were often employed to “refuel” steam engines on excursion stops. CNR Northern 6167, operating on a UCRS fantrip from Toronto to Niagara Falls (via Caledona, Welland Jct., Port Robinson and Stamford), takes on coal from CN Browning crane 50018 by the roundhouse at Niagara Falls, Ontario, on July 10th 1960.

I remember the Browning cranes very well at CN. At one time, there were several assigned to the Spadina Avenue Roundhouse complex. CN 50018 pictured above shows unassigned on the July 1960 CN Index of Cranes. Older sister CN 50017 was assigned to Stratford, ON at that time. While working at the Danforth Work Equipment Shop, I remember younger sister CN 50019 still in everyday service as late as November 1974 at the Danforth Steel Bridge Shop rear of 2314 Gerrard St. East in Scarborough, ON (between Main St. & Victoria Park Ave.) which is now a sea of townhomes and houses.

It doesn't seem like all that long ago! CNR needs to consider bringing her back. At the least, this locomotive needs to be under cover, year round.
