Comments on: In the early 2000′s the GMD1′S were still pretty rare in eastern Canada. Not long before I took this photo GMD1′S 1430 & 1431 arrived in Toronto. The pair had previously been assigned to the prairies and their light weight branchlines. The fresh paint and number on 1431 is due to its recent renumbering from 1601, at the same time it lost its distinctive six axle A-1-A trucks. 1430 was previously 1600. This pair spent decades serving the network if prairie branchlines and sadly helped disassemble many of the same line just prior to heading east. The pair is seen in Oakville yard preparing a transfer job that will next head to Aldershot yard. Unfortunately the pair was retired a number of years ago but luckily a free other GMD1′s have since taken their place, although their numbers are shrinking fast.

Checked with a source that I have...about a month ago, there were still 20 GMD-1s on the CN roster—not bad for 60 year old units rebuilt 30 years ago!
