Comments on: In the industrial heartland of Hamilton a pair of consecutive EMD SW8′s Dofasco 411 and 412 sit side by side at the railway’s main shop while a transportation dept employee has lunch on the ‘grass’. 412 has a Bottle train and this is a very rare sight – the bottle trains work deep in the plant and are rarely visible from public property. 411 is at the shop proper. To the left of the bottle train is NEW bottle car 625 recently delivered after heading for refurbishment. Recently, Gensets have started making inroads at the former Dofasco and the SW8′s days may be numbered. As alluded, this photo was taken from Public property.

I know it is common for in-plant use. It is not permitted for public road crossings though.

Gordon, this is a common practice. For example, the entire railway in Cardinal now uses american style crossbucks and they were recently installed on public roadway crossings.

I'd suspect that railways located entirely within private property have no requirement to adhere to TC standards for crossing protection, would be a company matter.

Around this time it was Dofasco's 100th anniversary. Chances are they were cleaned up for Senior Management or a VIP tour..

They definitely don't look this clean today.

Nice catch, Host. The little pups wear a fairly attractive paint scheme and, given their environs, relatively clean, too.

I had to field work at Burlington and Niagara Streets in Hamilton last week. Steve, now I know why you like shooting trains in Hamilton. It's pretty interesting for train shots. Caught 3840 shunting cars right where I was doing my work!

Or just lucky. I go to Hamilton often and back then if I saw something I'd try to shoot it if I could - it is after all on the way to my parents house..

Took years to get something meaningful and.. since then I haven't been so lucky (3 years later).

I rather doubt even 30 years ago there was much chance of getting to wander in those plants, "unless you knew somebody". I did get a few diesel shots but it was crummy weather, and they didn't pan out all that well. You've got to be a real sleuth to bag shots like this one.
