Comments on: In the mid 80′s there was a “Day in the Life of….” craze (for lack of a better word). This was the first railroad-related event – preceding CTC Board’s first Day in the West (In a few years it would become all of Nort America) by one day. Someone in St Catherines of Welland was organizing the event and asked photographers to make submissions. I sent is several shots that I had taken that day, but nothing ever became of the project. Nor were my slides ever returned to me. I am still rather ticked. Here is the westbound “Canadian” at Brickburn’s east switch, along the Bow River.

Okay, Steve. I see it. The promotion was on page 8 of the July’86 R&R. It will be interesting to find out whatever became of this. Hopefully someone will write……….

I have already put a couple of messages out asking about this event. No doubt there is a dozen guys in that Chapter that follow RP. So the word will get out, but Steve, it has been 30 years. (I readily admit that I would feel the same way as I have been thru the same sort of thing……and absence(of slides) makes the heart grow fonder, so the disappointment of missing slides will never fade away……….)

Hmmmm……….yes, I know of Andy Panko. I think he is still prez of the Niagara chapter of the Railway Historical Society here. Very interesting. Something must have gone wrong.

OK. I went through my CTC Board collection, and discovered that June 21 1986 was the second annual DITW. Although it was enjoyable to go through the back issues, there was no mention of the other DINA. So, I looked around for old Trains and Railfan magazines, and much to my surprise, I found a July ’86 Railfan.
In it, there is a large (1/5 page) ad for the “SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY RAILFAN EVENT OF THE DECADE”. It was sponsored by NiagaRail Publications and the only name listed is the editor Andrew Panko. The address is a RR #4 Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The project was subject to getting a certain number of pre-orders. It obviously did not achieve that goal. It is still a little annoying that they did not return my slides after repeated requests.

I am not too sure where I read about the event. CTC Board? Trains? The only thing that I can be certain of is that it wasn’t the Internet
I will look through any magazines that I have from that era.

Day in the Life, eh? I lived in St. Catharines at the time and I am scratching my noggin trying to figure out just where the source of this idea might have been………I did not hear of it….fortunately.
