Comments on: Interesting little place, mostly ignored, is Port Maitland. I had a choice of posting a photo of the old grey TH&B station itself, or this view of the station and surroundings as well.
Rather dismal, is it not? Everything you see in this image is gone now. Even the NEMO, which certainly didn’t make it back to Quebec:o)
This view is looking over to the west side of the mouth of the Grand River. It was here the second Welland Canal once originated. The village itself got its start back in the 1800s as a British Naval depot.
In this photo, to the left out of sight was the location of the lake pier, where between 1916-1932 approximately the TH&B Navigation Company operated ‘Maitland No. 1′, a railcar ferry boat that plied between here and Ashtabula, Ohio. Newsprint exported, among other things, and coal was brought in from Ohio for use in the Hamilton Steel companies.
The old station in this pic is boarded up. It did not last long after this image was captured. The massive building I believe is the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation plant, which by the look of it, provided the TH&B with a reasonable amount of traffic. Located in Port Maitland there also was Zinc and Chrome Ore smelter and refinery. Not sure of its location. Perhaps I have the info mixed up?
As usual appreciate input and corrections. Thanks!!

To clarify, the empties didn't connect with the inbound loaded train. Sometimes crews were deadheaded to Aberdeen from Quebec St to run the empties back to Quebec St, sometimes van hops were run out of Toronto to Aberdeen via Guelph Jct to get the empties and then run them to Quebec St.

We used to run phosphate rock trains destined for Port Maitland between Windsor & Aberdeen yard. I forget when they started, but I was the head end brakeman on the very first one east out of Quebec Street. They were good jobs, for Galt Sub crews, sometimes we run van hop back home from Hamilton, sometimes to Toronto via Guelph Jct. The returning empties were run as a unit to ensure they were back in Florida for loading.
The Windsor Sub runs were good jobs too. I had one trip with the empties on the Windsor Sub, where we were ordered for 0200 (2AM)at Quebec St. and we were off duty in Windsor just before 0600.

Great photo Arnold! Somehow missed seeing this when it was initially posted. But, being an avid station guy I made a trip one day down to Port Maitland....and found the old site. Tracks are still in use by CP I believe to this day, and I do remember pulling onto the property of the IMCC plant and crossing 2-4 tracks at the railway crossing. Seeing no station, it wasn't a long visit by any means. But still....a memory.

This plant started as Electric Reduction Co/ ERCO.
ERCO (IMC) had 1 or 2 different critters of their own. The neighboring plant had two of their own.
To answer these and many other questions, check Colin Churcher's fine Canadian Industrial website at -

Thanks, guys. It is such a sad scene, it is amusing. Probably nothing left there but the sky, the ground, and the water. :o)
I think I should take a run down there and see.
