Comments on: It is rather obvious the days of railroading over the CP in Elmira have ended. The track is rusted, the station is boarded up and even the doors are gone from what looks like the “his” and “hers” pots out back. This former CP line is now part of the Kissing Bridge Trailway, which consists of a good portion of the old Guelph to Goderich Railroad that used to run thru here. The station, and small yard, land was sold to Martin Milling (Martin Feed Mills) who built a new structure here when they diversified into Elmira Pet Foods in 1979 (now Elmira Pet Products). CP abandoned what was left of the rail line in early 1988. I’m guessing the station, which was on the north side of the tracks at North Arthur Street, came down around 1976. I am not sure of the subdivision name thru here……Elora or Elmira….or..??? correction appreciated.

Thanks so much for this. I was under the impression the Mill expanded using the location of the station for their pet food business. And I do not have information on how much traffic was over the line from 1974 onward. Any time I had been in the area it looked as though traffic had dried up…..like maybe once a week and was unaware of any Elmira businesses still using rail.
Another station destroyed by fire. The list gets longer and longer. Again, THANKS!!!

The station burned down on Halloween night 1975.Railroading didn’t end in Elmira until the Goderich Sub.was abandoned in 1988. Martin Feed Mill was on the other side of Arthur Street from the station grounds.Martins was a customer of CP. The pet food plant was built behind the existing mill but was never served by rail.

Thanks. I know the line as far as Elora became the Elora Sub. I guess my mind was not running on too many cylinders this morning. We’ll see what the “management” has to say, and then I will get this changed. Appreciate your input!!!

By looking at maps, wouldn’t this be the CP goderich subdivision? it seems like the only CP line that went through elmira.
