Comments on: Its a crappy looking day, so out I go. There is always something of interest along the RR on a crappy day. And it is a Sunday. The TH&B “starlite” to me often was earlier on a weekend, and this day it rolled by around the dinner hour. Nice lashup. As you can see, cold and damp; lots of plates and spikes piled up for some maintenance work I have forgotten about..I don’t like this sort of clutter in the shot, but looking back; hey, its all railroad related. Engineer waving to a trainwatcher whose name escapes me. Power on this version of the popular train is CP 5725, 5722, TH&B 401, 402, 403, 55 and CP 8791.

Phil was working at Terrace when you bought the Goug there.This is him waving to the train. I see his gold Comet in the picture.If you had rustproofing done,maybe I helped Phil rustproof it. Maybe we will see each other at a meeting soon.

Don’t know these guys, Bruce. Probably by sight but not by name. Perhaps Phil was at Terrace Merc when I bought my Cougar there in late 1975. You sure knew a lot of railroaders over your working life.

The fellow is Phil Brooks The engineer is probably Smokey Anderson.Phil worked at Terrence Mercury when I first got to know him,he had the run of the TH&B.He could even ride the Starlight back to Toronto.

The photo location I suppose is still there on the hillside, but the scene isn’t what it was. Three tracks now, Hamilton-bound. Shacks gone, signals moved, but last time I was in there, junk laying all over the place. And parking and trespassing not what it was. A difficult location to access, not really worth the bother any more.

Forgot to mention that metal shed showing in the photo. Always got in the way of a good photo, no matter where you stood. Was glad to see it go. The former tower in the background would have been better. Is this scene location possible today (August 2016)?

Quite interesting comments, about the photo and also the taker. He (Arnold) got around quite well in the days of lots of rail traffic, and never missed a beat. Really good photo with lots of motive power. Oh that it would return for an encore.

CNSd60….I believe the traditional starlight/kinnear trains ran until the D&H was acquired which resulted in more traffic and diff flows.. circa 1989? when CP went to the 500 series trains on the CN Oakville Sub. Last CP trackage rights trains ended in end of May 2009….most were running via GJct at the time but in the final few days/ week there was a slew of them via the CN.

CNSD60 – it’s highly likely half the traffic on this train is long gone (companies no longer in business) and whatever remains is most certainly routed another way and could even be routed via CN.

But it won’t be identifiable.. considering how many freight cars in the train would also be long gone..

The most likely train to carry any of this traffic now on CP is 246/7 which work Kinnear daily, but this train does not go to Toronto yard instead works Lambton. It would be difficult to compare honestly, since the Starlight originated out of Toronto yard.

The last CP trains on the Oakville sub were in 2010…
