Comments on: I’ve posted some ugly old structures, and this one is right up there with the worst. Unfortunately I have no information on it other than what you see on the sign. I believe it was along the track that ran by Atlas Steel; this building on the south side of East Main St. Going by weak memory. Did not properly mark the slide. Comments invited…….. It was demolished around 1980, I’m thinking.

Yeah, that Gradall operator would have been me!
I did a lot of ditching work all around southern Ontario that year. Welland, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, Dunnville, St. Thomas, London, to name a few.

Arnold, you may have missed shooting the Welland station and possibly scoring the wooden station name signs, however you sure captured a great image of the Welland Freight Shed. Historical photos show this building dates back at least to the Grand Trunk Railway days in the early 1900′s.

In the summer of 1974 I heard the CN hi-rail Gradall Operator who was performing ditch cleaning on the Dunnville Subdivision, had his tool car and Atco boarding car spotted tight against those yellow stop blocks seen between the freight shed and the elevated loading ramp, making for easy walking in and out of the boarding car.

Nema Problema…I was poking around today and agree both Welland Jct and Welland Stations were originally very similar… at any rate it is a very good photo of an ugly structure in the heart of a former beehive of industrial activity that included John Deere, Union Carbide, General Tire, The Steel Company of Canada, and my first employer…ATLAS STEELS ..(often referred to as THE BIG FIVE)….All gone, and / or reduced to legacy mfg now….

CORRECTION !!! My mistake. Sorry Klaucker, and others……I looked at a photo and did not realize the old Welland station looked almost Identical to the Welland JCT station and got them mixed up. The freight shed was behind Welland station……NOT the Junction station.

Arnold…interesting comment that Welland Junction station was across from this Freight Shed, which leads me to think that in the late ’60′s Canal realignment, the Freight Shed was moved from Welland Junction to your photo location at East Main-Ross Street some 5 to 7 km to the north.. this might also explain why the Norfolk & Western is still on the sign… and further musing.. maybe the original wood clad Freight shed was “upgraded” in the move north with that classy corrugated galvanized siding that was prone to rusting…

Arnold… never seen this, nor do I recall it, but that is at East Main in Downtown Welland, southwest side of the tracks….diagonal to the ATLAS STEEELS South Plant complex (now the new Welland Firehall) … the WHITING EQUIPMENT facility (Alexander and Division St), is a dead give away… building and Company are still there… and one of the things that WHITING is known for is the TRACKMOBILE.. so this is I guess the Canal Sub…Cheers MIKE
