Comments on: Lighter-weight GP9rm CN 4018 and GMD1 CN 1444 have paused in the afternoon sun with a bouquet of Sumach. The 4000′s are a lot rarer than other CN GP9rm locomotives in my area. According to Canadian Trackside Guide they are 9000 lb lighter than the other GP9rm’s, a 3.5% reduction from the usual 257,000 lb, which could make a difference on lighter rail.
My photo archive shows that lower number GP9rm’s in all series (4000′s, 4100′s, 7000′s, and 7200′s) retained the cylindrical CN GP9 exhaust spark arrestors as seen on 4018, but higher number units did not have them.

Thanks for the little tidbit on your spark arrestor findings. I was happy they re-used them. For me, it gave the new re-builds that familiar sound I'm used to hearing.
