Comments on: Nice trio of GP40-2L (W) locos, CN 9429, 9407 and 9455 roll Niagara-bound with what I had marked on the slide as an ‘oil train’, although I cannot recall where this would have come from or what it’s destination was. I am sure someone viewing this can fill me in. Thanks!!

Thanks Stuart!!! That makes sense. I rarely saw this train. Funny thing, I marked this slide “acid” train when I first labeled it, and some years later for an unknown reason crossed out ‘acid’ and wrote ‘oil’. Had it right the first time. )

Out West, three of these were standard power for speed freights all the way to Vancouver.

In those days in Ontario, GP40-2′s were the weapon of choice…or as leaders with older power following. The SD40′s were still mostly out west hauling unit trains in those days…trickling east as the SD40-2W’s arrived.

Nice one Mr Mooney! Interesting that they used 4 axles in ’78. No SD40′s or MLW 6 axles for power? Especially the possibility for a long run from Sudbury @Dave Brook noted. Love the Elephant style!
