Comments on: Old Sydney Collieries 2-6-0 17 is shown shuffling coal cars in August 1961. It was originally built by Alco of Schenectady NY in 1903 as Nova Scotia Steel & Coal 2-6-4T 10 (later rebuilt as a 2-6-0). It became Old Sydney Collieries 17, working out of Sydney Mines NS, and worked for two other coal operations before ending up on static display at Glace Bay NS. Unfortunately, research indicates it’s since been scrapped.

(Original photographer George Schaller, duplicate slide from the collection of Bill Thomson and posted on behalf of and with Mr. Schaller’s full participation).

She sat out in the salty air, as part of a static display. Between the salt and the sulfuric acid corrosion, there was nothing left to her. Another tragedy in well intentioned preservation.
