John, apparently it was acquired by ONR from NRE for use as an engine load test unit, but ONR found it to be a good runner and instead it joined the fleet as ONR 1740. The unit itself is one of the ex-KCS units CP had acquired in the 90’s, CP 5417, and was one of the two “white ghosts” to never get repainted in CP colours (5416 & 5417). The thing must be a cat with 9 lives.

Very nice picture Craig, blue sky and motive power with different paint schemes. Didn’t know there were ONR diesels still running in the heritage paint scheme. What’s with the ghost white 1740 ? Something new ? John
