Comments on: Operating as extra 6354, former train number 668 – the southbound RDC-2 passenger car from Owen Sound- is seen arriving at Palmerston, where RDC-1 6101 sits nosed up to CN 6118 on the Newton Sub side of the station on Saturday, October 24, 1970. Both 6101 and 6354 will be combined, and will depart at 0715h for the trip to Toronto (formerly train 658) via the Fergus, Guelph, Halton, and Weston Subs. Extra 6118 will too depart at 0715h for Stratford.

The official last runs of the RDC service to Owen Sound, Kincardine, Southampton, and Goderich was the evening of Friday, Oct 23, 1970. Though these services continued to operate to Toronto (and Stratford) as extras until the end of the month. Daylight saving time ended early Sunday morning, Oct 25, 1979, and CN and CP would bring out their winter timetables at this time change.

Wonderful rainy-day photo!
The track unit sitting on the station platform is a Bert Pyke Ltd. tie spacer built at the Pyke plant in Oshawa, ON.
These track units were originally numbered in the three-digit CN 800 series, later renumbered in the CN 704-xx series, and finally into CN 659-xx series in the System Work Equipment inventory.
Later in life, several of these side-arm tie spacers were converted to Pandrol clip removers, and CWR pullers.

Thankfully, the Palmerston depot and pedestrian bridge survive as part of the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum.
