Comments on: Phosphate rock from Florida was delivered by CP to Aberdeen Yard in west Hamilton for the TH&B to deliver it to International Minerals and Chemical Corp. in Port Maitland in the 1980s. Here we see the train ready to depart the yard as soon as the crew gets on board. Power shown is TH&B 72, 73, 57, 51 and 55. Whatever was available was pressed into service to tackle the 1% grade to top the escarpment at Vinemount.

I’d have to say what I miss the most since my first days of being a train buff is the HOWL of prime movers straining to make ‘the grade’, no matter where it was. Vinemount was one of those places that the thrill of hearing the deafening roar just never seemed to fade…..until……(sigh) The all-time classic location for surround-sound and earth shaking was, of course, the Horseshoe Curve in PA. Now, the sheer strength of todays locomotives almost takes the ‘fun’ out of it all. )
