Comments on: Power for both Montreal and Toronto sections of Canadian Pacific’s eastbound Canadian sits waiting under the bridge at Paris Street, as CP S3 7091 shuffles passenger cars east of the station in Sudbury. CP FP9 1406 and an F7B sit ahead, while CP FP7 1423, an F7B and FPA2 sit on the other side of the bridge by the fuel racks.

During CP operation, eastbound train #2 “The Canadian” from Vancouver split at Sudbury, with one train heading east to Montreal as train #2, and the other south to Toronto as train #12. The reverse happened with westbound trains #11 from Toronto and #1 from Montreal combining at Sudbury into #1 for Vancouver. Extra passenger cars would be kept at Sudbury, added or removed from consists as they were broken up or combined. Switching power was typically one of the locally-assigned 7000-series MLW S2 units.

The icicle breakers were an add-on by CP (only on 1400-series FP7 and FP9 units), as builder's photos of the FP9's don't show them. The winterization hatch also got enlarged around 1957-ish from the "single story" to the "two story" appearance.

As per the late Bruce Chapman, when VIA took over, the icicle breakers on the 1400's were removed in order for them to fit under the Winnipeg Union Station train shed (CP was running icicle breaker boxcars on some lines, which also helped reduce their need).

Did the icicle breakers come already installed from GMD or was that after it was delivered?

The winterization hatch looked like it could store bodies.
