Comments on: Quite often in days past I would get the opportunity to shoot what amounts to an unusual scene. And usually I do not get an explanation as to what I am photographing. And even when I do, I think I will remember, and of course, don’t. This image is a good example. The westbound passenger cannot be #77 because it would be dark out. The timetable shows #75 as an ‘express’ train right now, and it too would be under darkness as this image was shot before sundown and it is New Years’ Eve, 1985. So perhaps this is train #83 and the afternoon Budds from Niagara meeting at Bayview. First, we have a widecab pressed into passenger service. This was common for awhile. But never did I see a passenger train stop at Bayview, exchange passengers with the Budds out of Niagara. Were the Budds late for the meet in Burlington? Did someone forget to hold the westbound so passengers to London and west could transfer? What should have in my mind been a smooth transfer from one train to another ended up being a fair group of people having trudge thru the snow on what was NOT a warm afternoon. Bet there were some tempers warming up the air though. Interesting scene. Happy New Year 1986. :o)

Arnold,don’t forget that there was only one platform at Burlington (Burlington West) on the South Track. If No. 640 (the Niagara Falls Train) had been significantly late, the Westbound VIA (quite possibly No. 83, as you say)would have had to hold east of Burlington station…this stop at Bayview for connecting passengers probably saved 30 minutes of delay.

I remember, way back in the 1980s, seeing something similar happen in Stratford.

The eastbound passenger train had just completed its stop and was then meeting the westbound just east of the station.

Both trains stopped and a passenger was then transferred from eastbound to westbound.

Only thing I could think of, at the time, was that the passenger was supposed to get off at St. Marys, but missed their stop, and then didn’t realize it until the train was already pulling out from Stratford.
