Comments on: Reg Button caught this very interesting westbound consist in perfect afternoon light in mid-March 1987.
MLW M630 CP 4573 carries a white extra flag on the engineer’s side only.
Following are Algoma Central GMD SD40 AC 183, MLW RS-18 CP 8765, and GMD SW1200RS CP 8161.
All CP units wear the then-current wide-stripe multimark scheme.
That same year 1987, CP stopped applying multimarks and black ends during re-painting.

They likely switched the 8161 out at Lambton while making a lift. They knew it was being set off at Galt, so better to have it trailing & get paid at Lambton for switching it out there. It was always preferred to make stops enroute once running off miles, as short as possible.
For those unaware, years ago, crews were paid on the minute basis in the terminal & then their run miles between terminals. Example, at Quebec Street we were paid by the minute from time on duty to time we reached the outer main track switch at Quebec St then got 102 miles between there & reaching Mile 10 west of Kipling, then we went back onto & being paid by the minute until off duty at Agincourt Toronto Yard. We were paid the same for that 102 miles whether it took 4 hours or 8 hours.
