Right you are MrDan. It’s a pile driver lead for a steam powered pile driving crane. (see attached link)
The wood piles on the next flat car have yet to be ‘sharpened’ on one end for driving.
Look at the white birch trees stuffed into the car pockets to hold the wood piles in place.

A very nice consist. That boom in the foreground doesn’t look like a conventional crane boom, I’m thinking it’s a pile driver attachment and the poles stacked behind might be for that purpose.
