Comments on: SD40-2F CMQ 9010 and Jordan Spreader CP 402998 are in the process of cutting away some soil and ballast on the north side of the main between Morse and Herbert SK on the Swift Current Sub. Perhaps prepping for winter and the subsequent spring runoff? I wont pretend to know.

I also notice an SBU on the front of the spreader, indicating that it will be pulled backward at some point. That unit doesn't lend itself to backward running.

Thanks for this great shot. It illustrates the seemingly lesser known function of spreaders. I imagine this is just routine track maintenance to ensure proper drainage.
In my railway career, I saw Jordan spreaders used for this type of work far more often than for snow clearing. Even with the heavier snowfalls of earlier decades, the spreaders didn't get near as much use as CP's home built wedge plows.
