8515 was part of a group of specially equipped freight/passenger service GP9's (8501-8529), equipped with both dynamic brakes and steam generators for passenger protection power in the mountainous regions out west. The dynamic brake section of the hood (and dual water/fuel tanks below the frame) necessitated placing the air tanks over the front radiator fan panel, a unique configuration only found on CP.
