Comments on: Seen on Fort Erie trackage now long removed, Conrail GPs 5447 and 5448; both fresh from a rebuild program that ran from 1976-1979 either by ICG, ROCK or MK; haul a long string of container laden gons off the old Dunnville Sub trackage heading toward the USA. Overhead is the Central Ave roadbridge. Some minor changes resulted in these units being reclassified as GP8 rather than the GP7s as originally built. Would be nice if some experienced railroader with this group could verify what sort of merchandise was shipped via this Fort Erie “Container Train”. I have always been curious.

This is a train I never knew ran in Canada since I didn’t go into Fort Erie too much. I would have liked to seen these in the “flesh”. In the “dark ages” of photography you could only expose one picture per subject so the locomotives were what you shot. I think that export Ford parts from Livingston is a good guess. We can’t tell unless we could see the “Marks and Numbers” that would have been stencilled on those crates.

Could it be Auto parts from Livingstons in Tillsonburg heading to Baltimore for ship out? They use to send auto parts out in crates with gondolas.

I don’t know, Mr. Host. As needed, I would guess. Perhaps someone on the list can enlighten us. I only saw it 3 or 4 times. It must have come up from somewhere outside of the yard as I never did see gons of crates in the yard…..and each time I saw this it came out the same track. But I cannot imagine CR power going much farther than Fort Erie area on the Dunnville Sub. If I knew what was in those crates I would have an idea where these shipments originated.
