Comments on: Shown here is the CP train #734 heading over the Niagara River via the old Suspension Bridge, now just a hulk too expensive to dismantle after the CP’s line was pulled out of downtown Niagara Falls Ont in the late 1990s. Power this day is CP 5841, CRL 603, CP 751, SOO 6621 and CR 6308, 6322, 6304 and 812; these last four going off lease. CP had leased 24 SD40s back in the mid-90s from Conrail Leasing, and these were 4 of the first 12 to be returned by mid-November. Second unit in consist, CRL 603 (x-CR 6280)as well as another 11 Conrail Leasing units on the system remained until taken over by HELM (and renumbered)in the spring of 1996. Yes, I remember vividly shooting this as I was in a rather precarious position for the photo, almost hanging over the edge…..well, so it looks, anyway.
When looking at various scenes from Niagara Falls and Fort Erie from years past, I really do wonder where all the traffic went.
The old Suspension Bridge was suppost to be the main focus of a dedicated Truck Bridge, according to some plans released around 2002 or so. But I guess it all fell thru and the old bridge is just destined to rust away.
For those not familiar with this location, in the background is the Whirlpool Bridge that currently carries the daily Toronto-NYC Amtrak on the upper deck.
