Comments on: Signs of the TH&B are abound in Hamilton as a Kinnear to Aberdeen yard transfer rolls by the elevated right of way in the southern part of town near the Hunter St. Station area. This transfer had a crap ton of steel for the Steel Centre on it and surely that solo GP9 was working hard. I enjoy photographing around here but without a drone or major elevation it is a challenging place for photography of trains. I’ve pulled off a few shots over the years.

They were built new on new frames Steve, only some accessories (trucks, compressors, etc) from the GP9u’s were refurbished and reused (apparently that was enough for them to qualify as “rebuilds” on paper). The GP9u’s that were traded in got cut up, including the frames.

jknott, yeah… from “99,990″ – even at that price investors wouldn’t buy down there at that time. typical of hamilton, so many projects just fail to get off the ground.

Kevin there are about 5 bridges that have TH&B lettering around hamilton. One says “TH&B / CN” Guess why…

Thanks Dano – I believe the GP20C-eco’s did have frames re-used, but I don’t know enough about what was re-used and what wasn’t – I believe they were frame up rebuilds at the least and did use the units as donor cores

Unlike some other rebuilding programs, such as the recent NBSR program which used anything on hand at Progress as cores, not the traded in units… but the difference there is 13 years of time..

Stefan, the 1684 was a local Toronto (Agincourt) Yard resident for many years, but being a slug mother, Toronto kept it on a tight leash.

Early 2010′s motive power assignment notes show:
1682 – London
1683 – Winnipeg
1684 – Toronto
1685 – Coquitlam
1686 – Moose Jaw
1687 – Binghamton NY
1688 – St. Luc
1689 – ? (Calgary or out west?)
1690 – St. Luc

1682 was retired 9/30/11 and “rebuilt on paper” as GP20C-ECO 2212 (in reality, allocated/traded in for).

I just wish we had more former TH&B GP7 units around here back then. There seemed to be only the one in London – which I did get but by this time (2008) it was basically dead (block froze)

were there any others in Ontario in the 2000′s ?
