Comments on: So much history in the city of welland, from railway to navel. After seeing Steve’s shot of the movie train just behind my shot here, I thought I would throw this shot into the mix. This is the old connecting track to what was once the Canada Southern mainline, sadly for the most part abandoned today. The last customer on the line Vesuvius still from time to time receives NS covered hoppers that travel over the old CASO swing bridge over the one time Welland canal, since relocated. The crew this day had just returned from Vesuvius and headed over to Tim Hortons for lunch.

I noticed the fence myself. I’d love to find a train there some day. When I’m in the area I take a look to see if I may get lucky I saw a CP guy inspecting the track once…

BTW 110 was reportedly scrapped as it had dissapeared as early as late summer or early fall of 2022. No proof it was scrapped though, but given SLM nearby..

I had confirmed back then that SLM purchased all the former Trillium locomotives, and that nothing was for sale (parts) at the time.

The 110 is not in service if not scrapped but Vesuvious is going strong making firebrick and high temp furnace liner materials from the Georgia clay!
That bridge is fenced on each end now and in no danger of having problems, it could outlive us.

Yes Vesuvius still does. See Steve’s recent ONR in Welland post for more commentary on that. Vandals set fire to the bridge a couple of years ago – almost did the line in from what I heard.

I believe just Vesuvius when the need it. CP cut off the other end years ago. I wonder how long before the age of the old swing bridge kills the line for good.
