Comments on: Stashed away somewhere in MacMillan Yard and having not been used in 10 years, CN 50948 was called upon for duty and finally got to spread its wings. With more lake affect snow in the forecast and the one train a day in each direction, the spreader was called in to move back the snowbanks. From what I was told the last time the Newmarket Sub seen a spread was over a decade ago or so.

So, the spreader clears - or at least flattens - the snow on the tracks it is on, and on the adjoining tracks?

This is awesome. Love it!
I cant speak for CP, but CN always has a 3 man crew for work trains. Engineer, conductor, and the brakeman. The amount of engineering employees varies, but is generally 2.

Very cool photo. Doesn't look like it would have been the easiest to get either, in more ways than one.

Nice Photo! How does the plow control the locomotive pushing it? I know it has some things on the plow like a horn and lights.

Classic shot of a classic piece of equipment.
CN 50948 (815-26) is a Jordan Type J, s/n 1432, built in 1973 and delivered new to the Danforth Work Equipment Shop in Scarborough, ON. Some 40+ years later, new spreaders being built by Jordan successor Harsco Track Technologies can be equipped with a full locomotive control stand and a plethora of safety, productivity and ergonomic appliances not even heard of in the early 70's.
