Comments on: Submitted on the 24th anniversary of the Hyde Park train crash. I recommend the TSB Report about this mishap – http://www.bst-tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/rail/1995/r95s0021/r95s0021.asp
In the collison with the tail end of CN train 308, Bombardier HR616 CN 2105 (lead unit of train 272) left the tracks and spun about 135 degrees. Tail-first trailing unit LMSX 723 (GE Dash 8-40CW) and several of train 272′s front end boxcars derailed but stayed in-line with the rails, the forward momentum of their train resulting in them overtaking CN 2105, impacting and pushing forward train 308. Among 308′s destroyed tail-end railcars was a hopper. LMSX 723 also took serious collision damage, and looks like the hopper load has whitened it.
Less than a year old at the time, LMSX 723 was taken to Conrail’s ex-PRR Juniata Shop in Altoona PA where it was repaired and returned to service.

Apparently as long as the frame isn't bent (much), and the locomotive is still worth enough, it can and often will be repaired - it's a different story from an automobile. (Years ago I saw an apparently active CP FP7A with a noticeably bent read frame.)
One thing about this picture that puzzled me is that dark thing top of the long hood above the "S". It is the locomotive horns with the windshield of a truck in the background.
