After sitting in the dome car through the Upper Spiral Tunnel I took the opportunity and relocated into the vestibule, opening the top half of the Dutch door to get this photo and a few more during the remainder of the descent into Field. The Spiral Tunnels, which opened to traffic in 1909 reduced the heavy and somewhat dangerous grade from 4.5% to 2.2%.

Yes, those were great times. I can’t say I ever got into trouble for opening a door, if the Conductor or Trainman happened to walk between cars you might get a “hey boys you know your not allowed here” or “don’t forget to close it up when your done” if they knew you. Some were definitely more by the book about.
