Stephen: it was part of an early 90's rebuilt program for GP30 and GP35 units done for BN by MK, EMD and VMV. It involved both BN's own units, and acquiring units secondhand from other roads to rebuilt for BN, including ex-SOU, ICG, CSX and SP units.

This unit (ex-PAL, exx-ICG, and originally nee-G&MO GP35 613) was rebuilt and upgraded by VMV in the early 90's with 645 power assemblies and -2 electronics. Classified a "GP39V" now. It also lost its trucks for standard Blomberg B's.

BNSF 2968 was in Mac Yard a few days later for work.

The neat thing about that unit, it began life as a GM&O GP35 delivered with AAR-B trucks off an Alco FA trade-in locomotive (as was common for some RR's trading in Alcos to EMD during the GP30/35 era).

So that is what happened. The gp38 was swapped out for a 7000 series gp9. Then a day or two after your shot Jacob and I went to shoot the bnsf and found three matching gp9 instead as TC bad ordered the bnsf sending it home.

The gp9's were a real treat to see instead of the bnsf.
