Comments on: The GEXR takeover of the Guelph Sub was in its’ infancy at 5 months when this shot was taken; and the railroad was forced to lease CN locomotives in order to cover all bases. Here we see from the Margaret Av overpass the eastbound morning GEXR #432 as it passes the Kitchener VIA station. Power is a couple of leased CNs, 9661 and 9633 with GEXR 4046 trailing. The CNs have long since departed the roster, and the GEXR has been scrapped. The area in this photograph is undergoing massive changes as preparations for GO service is under way.

Kevin, it's happened a number of times over the years. Much more 10 or so years ago... some for a few days.. some for a few weeks.. some for just one round trip. In reverse chronological order, and from various sources, here's what I found. This is not exhaustive.. not in the least.

CN 5277 and 5244 loaned on 11/18/2009 to at least 11/27/2009

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX2xT6sWN1A

On the 26th the CN pair even worked to the mine in Goderich - so these were around a few days:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnW8HFZAihI

February 25 2004 - CN GP40-2W 9515 - gone by March.

November 13 2003 - GCFX 6048 IC 6140 Train 431 at Kitchener - found them after work. See below for reason why:
-
November 12 2003 - Potash extra ran to Kellys with FOUR cn engines - on November 13 in the AM these four CN units powered 432, requiring CN to 'loan' power to GEXR again for the return as 431 on the 13th. No one OS'ed the extra nor the return engines on my source lists.

Early March (before the 14th) 2003 - CN 9581 loaned to GEXR

March 30 2003: CN 722 recrews at Jane St for GEXR with CN 5337-5242-5551 and 97 potash loads for Kellys at around 5 PM. 431 was ahead of them at the Credit when the recrew occurred.

(These days GEXR does not have spare crews for such a thing!)

March 14 2003 - CN 2404-CN 5254 added on GEXR 431.

This list does NOT account for any re-routes or detours.. nor the CN engine(s) that rescued passenger trains (there was a VIA 84 with a CN leader 10 years ago.. once)

Why is GEXR using a CN locomotive just for this short window of time?

And this also happened back in spring of 2005; GEXR leased a GP40-2W from CN (in very ratty paint). Interesting that it was 4-axle power then as GEXR was using all 4-axle power on their trains. Now, they get a 6-axle locomotive because they use 6-axle power on 431/432.

I've gone through my pics of the 2005 CN loco on GEXR; however, I'm not sure if I can swing a shot on here. I will try in time.

CN loaned engines happened frequently until RA was bought by Fortress and management changed (Remember RA/FEC? The merger that almost happened, but actually did happen?). Every winter... it seemed to happen - sometimes for a weekend , sometimes for much longer.

I don't think I do, Jacob. For some reason I would end up at K/W and then of course could not chase due to traffic. If I find anything I will try and post. It seemed every time I headed toward Guelph, I would get caught up hanging around Puslinch and the CPR. :o)

Good angle. Even in the early 2000's in my pre-"hey, why don't I shoot trains?" days taking notes I remember seeing more than a few GEXR's with CN GP40-2W's pitch-hitting.

Looking back at my notes, I probably just thought they were CN trains with some foreign locos.

Glad the image is appreciated, guys. Thanks. And.....London East....geez, I dunno. But, like a lot of other requests, it will be in the back of my mind in case I find something.
