I agree with Todd, a little more zoomed out will give a larger blurred background which will enhance the feel of the train speeding by. I also tried panning almost at the EXACT location as you...what I found worked best, was manual focus but having your lens zoomed out as far as it can go (get as much as the surrounding area as you can). Shoot in raw, practice the gentle 'side to side' movement of your camera capturing the motion of the train, and you can always crop your photo later with great results.
