Comments on: The Old and the New. On the longest day of the year with the sun up high and hot, we see the brand-new $2.8M ONR SD75I #2100 on display for all at the Englehart station and head office. John Thib, I believe ONR General Manager at the time, ushered me aboard to have a look around. Nice, but for all that money one would think it would come with hotplate AND air-conditioning..NOT a choice of either. This new on the scene locomotive was parked next to the T&NO (Temiskaming & Northern Ontario) #701, maintained in pristine condition with pride as a tribute to the very last steam engine that ran on these rails, retiring to display after the June 25, 1957 farewell. The engine began life as #158 in 1921, then to #758 in 1935, and #701 in 1940. Oddly enough, in retirement it ended up outlasting the ONR 2100, which was wrecked April 12, 2011 and subsequently mothballed. http://www.railpictures.ca The BEST Canadian photos on the Internet, eh?
