Comments on: The quintessential image of Weston GO Station, circa mid-2000′s: GO Transit cab car 216 trails F59PH 542 on southbound train #260, the “Bramalea Flip”, departing Weston Station enroute from Bramalea to Toronto Union Station. After our morning class downtown was over, we just rode the afternoon train from Toronto to Bramalea for fun, then back down and off at Weston to shoot CN #577 hot on our tail (that was spotted switching Malport before the GO trip back south) before making our way back downtown via the TTC’s 89 Weston Road bus and Bloor-Danforth subway. To say Weston GO station was somewhat underwhelming was being generous. The basic tunnel near the underpass off Lawrence Avenue leading up to the platform was typical GO “cold concrete” era architecture, with sparse amenities awaiting above. The small corrugated shack of a station building (that always seemed to be closed), next to the quaint waiting room dating from its CN days as…a waiting room (although decently warm on a winter morning at 7am when everyone was crowding inside, it too also always seemed to be closed except for morning rush hour). A far cry from the grander station present in the 1960′s when John Freyseng visited. The surrounds in this part of Weston were also lackluster and somewhat sketchy with apartment buildings, parking garages, a small nearby afterthought of a GO parking lot, old houses and a weedy overgrown yet busy shared CN-CP-GO-VIA freight-passenger railway corridor that was wide open to wander around (a plus to those so inclined). All swept away including the waiting room building (the last vestiges of the ghost of CN’s Weston Station) in the early 2010′s for a new, larger, more modern station to the south with two separate entrances and more parking, the north one located where the old West End Chrysler Dodge auto dealership was (demolished mid-2000′s), and a large grade-separated trench full of tracks to appease the residents of Weston (yet, puzzlingly leaving the busy CP freight line at-grade beside as a thorn in the side of residents for years to come).

I have a strong sense of nostalgia for this humble station. I am no fan of the current quad track weston sub with vader signals every 200 feet and with the current navigational headache that is current Weston GO/UPX. Crazy to think they want to build yet another station less than a mile north of Bloor…..
