Comments on: There’s a lot of photos of TTC T1 and TR cabs floating around, but not many of the old Hawker Siddeley H5′s, so here’s a cab-view of TTC H5 5759 during a quick rush-hour pause at Union Subway Station while it was in service as the guard car. All the important bits are here, including speed and air pressure gauges, DC ammeter, indicator lights, a big red button (don’t push!) for the horn, a smaller red button to uncouple the car (don’t touch!), the communications unit, a seat (don’t sit!), the manually-cranked run number box mounted in the front window, the right side door control panel with door opening and closing buttons (don’t press!), and the large WABCO controller arm that needs to be pushed down (as a deadman feature) and rotated to the correct throttle setting for operation. The CN/VIA Turbo Trains used a similar throttle arrangement, as did the MLW/Bombardier LRC demonstrator JV1, and the HSC-built Montreal Expo Express trains. The reverser lever can be seen mounted on the gold chain in the pouch below (it would be inserted in the slot below the main panel if the car was leading) All the old now-retired Hawker/UTDC equipment used the same basic controller setup, but by the T1′s they switched to a T-style controller lever that carried over to the TR’s. There’s some good in-cab footage of an H1 operating in the 1998 TV-movie version of “The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3″ filmed in Toronto using an old H1 subway car, and featuring a surprisingly notable cast including Vincent D’Onofrio, Lorraine Bracco, and Richard Schiff.
