Comments on: There’s no shortage of cameras and Kodachrome out on this sunny day: fantrip attendees photograph TTC PCC 4589 taking the curve from southbound Mount Pleasant Avenue to westbound St. Clair Avenue East, during what was probably a farewell charter for the TTC’s group of secondhand A10-class ex-Cleveland PCC streetcars (TTC 4575-4601, built 1939-40). There’s even one dedicated fellow with a smoke in hand while taking his photo. Most of this series of streetcars were retired and shipped off to Egypt in the mid-late 1960′s (they became redundant due to the Bloor-Danforth subway opening in 1966 and extension in 1968), but a few A10′s like 4589 hung on into the early 70′s until being retired (4589 was one of ten PCC’s later sold to Tampico, Mexico, where it did run for a time). Streetcar service on Mount Pleasant wasn’t far behind – despite TTC’s early 70′s decision to not scrap its streetcar network as previously planned, service on Mount Pleasant ended in late July 1976 and was replaced by trolleybuses.
