Here is a summary regarding a station that went against (and survived) the usual fate of stations operated by the CP, a company known for its ruthless destruction of outdated structures all over the country since the late 1970s. Fernie station was opened in 1909 and operated until 1964 when the last passenger train left town. The station eventually was donated to the city in 1979. In 1987, renovations started and a rather energetic effort had it finished and reopened in 1990. It featured all new but historically accurate windows. Because it had to be moved back from the tracks it also sits on a new solid concrete foundation. It surfaced as a Community Arts and Crafts Centre. And did well. The old baggage & freight area now supports live music and theatre. The ticket office area became a restaurant. Out front the platform is now a nice deck for train watching, and of course, having a few drinks. Fernie prides itself in being a popular tourist stop and the station blends right in.
