HunterBHolmes comment on toilets brought back some memories. I recall when we had display board hotbox detectors on CP, we were grinding up the hill westbound out of Streetsville & I had an urgent need to ‘attend the toilet’. I was alone in the van & between our speed slowly increasing & my ‘chore’ taking a tad longer than expected…I missed the board which went out a few sends after the train passed by. That’s the time one has to ask themselves “do I feel lucky?” I did, so I gave the head end an all clear over the radio & nothing ever came of it. I suppose things could have been very different though.

As a railroader and enthusiast, these types of shots are always my favourite. Not only are they a time capsule of years gone by, but they highlight the too-often overlooked ‘human’ side of railroading. And the comment about the toilet, from the outside, that wouldn’t be something you think about… but on the inside those few creature comforts make or break your day sometimes. Fantastic shot.
