Comments on: This un-numbered stationary generator car was sitting outside the car/locomotive shop tethered by a number of power cables to an out-building which housed Cartier’s Cowen-Sheldon 150 ton wrecking crane No. C-4. The car was built new in 11/59. I do not know if it was purpose built as a generator or if it was modified by Cartier for the purpose.

This is a Power Generator car (PGC) model M-16 built by GMDiesel, London. It it representative of approx 44 such cars built at London for various private owners who needed a way to generate electrical output in remote locations ( either parttime or fulltime/standby). The M-16 stood for 'mobile', 16 cylinders. Their serial numbers were different from locomotives, in this case, the 898 was G1026 built 10/59. QCM also bought an 8 cylinder model in 1959 but I do not know it's " road number".

Right you are Chris! I blew up the photo and the number appears to be either 893 or 898. I will be sure to get up close and personal with this car on my next visit to the Cartier. Get ready for some photos at your site.

Actually looks like it's marked QCM 893 at left. The vertical power cable runs right through the middle of the reporting marks/number.

Some neat stuff here Paul. If you have any old freight car shots like this, perhaps you'd consider submitting them to my site over at http://canadianfreightcargallery.ca ?
