Comments on: This was the very first run of the TH&B/CP Nanticoke Steel Train, which run via Hamilton to Brantford and southward over the old TH&B line on November 7, 1983. The power, leased units from the ‘Chessie System’, on this occasion were B&0 4815, C&0 3885 and C&0 4828. The run went smoothly. Because the marked time of around 1430 out of Hamilton was worrisome for any photographers that ventured as far as Waterford, it was almost a miracle of sorts when the sun popped out at exactly the right time while I was up on the old LE&N High Bridge watching this train, which had just come off the Wye heading west, backing up into town to cross over and head back south on the track visible at the right hand side in this image, thereby continuing on to Nanticoke having crossed the old CASO without the benefit of the Out of Service bridge. By the time the train was heading back south, darkness ensued and for photos, it was game over. Visible in this shot, besides all that trackage that is now nothing but hiking trails, is the north part of Waterford in the background. The town is spliced by the Nanticoke Creek, and to the left and mostly out of the photo, the Waterford Ponds. It is a nice area, the station is out of sight around the bend and still exists as a commercial enterprise.

I noticed this photo on an information plaque near Shadow Lake in Waterford this past weekend. I knew it had to be an AW Mooney photo. A great view, I have cycled and walked over the bridge many times, I’ll remember the camera next time.

@Marcus, my friends and I used to hang out on the bridge back in high school, well before the bridge was converted for trail use. It was indeed a scary experience for some! haha

Simply awesome. By the time I discovered Waterford and the CASO, I learned of the railway history for this town…three RR’s…Michigan Central (CASO), TH & B and the LE & N. At least the town realized the significance of the old “Black Bridge”…and had it saved.

Marcus: When the warm weather comes (or maybe before it goes!) copy this photo and head down there for a hike. The “view from the top” would make an interesting ‘time machine’ photo. The deck is a hiking trail now. No more losing your crap out there !!!
