Comments on: TIME MACHINE MATERIAL??? While on a day trip to Toronto in 2010, I captured the ever changing skyline in downtown Toronto. What brought this memory about was seeing Dave Beach’s photo from 1978 of the Canadian parked at Union Station, with the Royal York hotel as a backdrop.

I am hoping this will be considered for the Time Machine contest – as this was a difficult photo to have taken. I never knew about Dave’s photo until only recently. And the changes are obvious.

My angle of the Royal York is different than what Dave captured back in 1978. That’s because much has been built up on the former yards of the CP…as urban sprawl now seems to rule the lands (hence why there is a streetlight and a traffic signal in my photo). Roundhouse Park is a tribute to the former days of Toronto railroading, and well worth a visit. Thankfully Dave captured an era coming to an end…CP and CN handed over passenger services to VIA…and GO was created almost around the same time as VIA. And from Dave’s photo to mine, much has changed on the Royal York. It is no longer ‘railway owned’, although still the premier hotel of Toronto’s downtown core.
