<title>Comments on: Times a changing – note the derelict Massey Harris plant building&#8230;.

The &#8216;new&#8217; daily VIA #1 Canadian is on the CN Weston Sub., heading to the CN Newmarket Sub., &#8211; passing the occupied Strachan Ave. Crossing Tower.

At CN Boyne (Bala Sub) #1 will enter CP Rail at Reynolds (Parry Sound Sub) to CP Rail Sudbury (no interchange of cars) and continue on CP Rail to the CP Rail Vancouver Station.

And interesting times, VIA#1 power: ex CP Rail FP9A #1413; ex CP Rail F9B #1954; leased CP Rail RS-10s #8576 in Script livery.

The view from the CP Rail Galt Sub (where CP Rail #11 &amp; #12 The Canadian operated daily for 23 years), March 10, 1979 Kodachrome by S.Danko.

Interesting: At that time the operation of the ditch lights was at crew discretion.

note the ex CP Rail Dining Room car dead-heading behind the leased CN Steam Generator car.

At this time the daily VIA #3 Super Continental operated from Central Station, Montreal on CN to Dorval then on to CP Rail to CN North Bay where an across platform connection was made for westbound Toronto originating passengers arriving on daily #121 – yes the ONR The Northlander provided the western service for CN lines passengers. And daily eastbound #4 passengers to Toronto walked across the CN North Bay platform to daily #122 The Northlander.

The transcon arrangements described lasted one season, by June 1979 the trains were swapped: Canadian daily #1 &amp; #2 served Montreal only; the Super Continental daily #3 &amp; #4 served Toronto only and the westbound trains were combined at CP Rail Sudbury continuing on CP Rail to Thunder Bay – Kenora to CN Winnipeg then split onto the separate CN and CP Rail routes to CN Vancouver (and eastbound vice versa).[ And for one summer season only 1979 CP Rail hosted four daily transcontinentals #1, #2, #3 &amp; #4, CP Rail Sudbury – Thunder Bay – Kenora to CN Winnipeg: where cars were interchanged ]

And by June 1979 a &#8216;new&#8217; VIA #7 &amp; #8 (daily except Tuesdays) served the CN route Capreol – Winnipeg.

Got it?

Whew!</title>
