Comments on: VIA RDC-1 6109 trails a sister RDC operating on train #652 as they depart downtown Toronto in a cloud of Detroit Diesel exhaust, heading eastbound over the Lower Jarvis St. rail viaduct and past the Crombie Park apartments. According to period timetables, #652 “The Ontarian” was a daily (except Saturday) Toronto-Kingston run departing 13:00 from Toronto’s Union Station. One of the many runs still handled by Budd RDC’s or “Railiners” (in CN parlance) at the time.

VIA 6109 was one of many RDC’s purchased secondhand by CN: originally built for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois as their “RDC-1″, and purchased by CN in 1964. After serving for VIA, 6109 was sold to Ferrocarriles de Cuba with a few others in 1998.

My very first VIA Rail ride was on the Halifax-Sydney 605 on September 16, 1988 which was operated using RDC's. I have loved them ever since.
