Comments on: Wandering down to Fort Erie, as usual; the transfer from Buffalo had dropped off the traffic and was going over to the yard office. Around this time I saw quite a few GPs in this service, but to see an RS-3M was somewhat of a rarity. After all, there were only 30 of them on the roster, 9960-9999. As for that soothing ALCO sound, it was absent. This 1954 built unit had gone in for a recent overhaul like many, and an EMD engine was installed. The spiffy new Conrail paint job was a dead giveaway. Still, CR 2370 and 9992 together was my treat for the visit.

Penn Central and later Conrail rebuilt a bunch of their old RS3 fleet with 12-567's pulled out of retired EMD E-units. The work was performed at their DeWitt shops, so the rebuilt RS3's became known as "DeWitt Geeps". The ex-LV hammerhead unit, 211 (as CR 9920) also got the DeWitt Geep treatment, as did the Casco "CNJ 1548" (http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=18600) One or two other notables were RS3's rebuilt with a chopped short hood, or missing the short hood altogether (CR 9950).

This one got the "clean" treatment, earlier rebuilds had a large square housing over the exhaust area.
