Comments on: WC 6001, 6590, 2252 and 2052 pulls away from the harbour facilities (on Lake Superior) with ore loads for the steel company in Sault Ste. Marie. This image was taken shortly before the operation shut down for good. Tracks for the sub were then pulled up in 2000. Michipicoten Harbour then slid back into being somewhat of a ghost town compared to its past heydays of 25 homes, a store, a school and so on………..now, just a few homes and cottages. Superior Aggregates I understand is opening up a trap rock mine in the area, so the community may very well be reborn once again. Lead unit 6001 renumbered for new owner Wisconsin Central, but is still in Algoma colours.

@BradKetchen - I don't know what runs the Edmund Fitzgerald ran over it's career, but the fateful last trip was Duluth-Cleveland, I believe.

Yes - ore comes from one of the Ishpeming, MI area mines - it was Tilden, but not sure now. Initially they ran as unit trains, but now the daily DPU'd CN train from Green Bay lifts these at Escanaba or Gladstone on the way north.

I don't know where the ore comes from now. I am assuming Northern Michigan because it is better quality.

Most interesting Arnold, have seen only a few pictures of ACR Michipicoten branch. Visited the harbour on Lake Superior in summer of 2006 width son Stephen on a “boys” motor trip to Wawa, not much there then but there was a nice small marina. Thanks, John
