Comments on: What can you say about this photo from Hamilton’s Bay Street bridge over the throat of Hamilton Yard?!? Leased N&W F7As 3658 and 3666 prepare to work the North Yard after crossing over. On the left, you can see the industries which once lay south of Stuart Street; the lead to reach those customers; the track to the James Street Station rising; CN’s piggyback ramp; and–in the distance–the Carload Centre/Express building; Diesel Shop; and the then-active South Yard tracks. Tracks in Hamilton Yard were reconfigured during the year 1974; perhaps another member can provide additional information regarding when marine containers started to be handled in Hamilton.

In the timetable, the CTC location was Hamilton Yard. The James Street station was Hamilton and had its own operator. However, on the radio, crews would call the “Stuart Street yard master”. There was also a “mobile yard master” who supervised crews in “the Hole (N&NW spur)” and industrial areas.

And don’t forget that Hamilton Yard TMD coordinated main track train movements from the “North Yard” switch to N&NW Jct; the YA Dispatcher controlled Hamilton Jct to Burlington and YO controlled the Oakville sub east of there. London NI dispatcher dispatched the Grimsby sub to Niagara Falls; West of Hamilton West on the Dundas sub was dispatched by London K; finally, the Hagersville sub was also dispatched from London. Got that? (Good thing they wrote train orders down!)
