Comments on: While the CP Hamilton Sub was closed down for some work at the Hunter St. Tunnel in Hamilton, trains were rerouted over the CN Grimsby sub. This particular train I have marked as a #521, but I do not remember usually seeing stacks on the head end of this train. Perhaps this is a detoured detour? Power up front: CP 5601, 4570(B), SOO 758 and HATX 920. Large “office building” in background is actually in the United States, on the other side of the Niagara River. (At the time of this photo, International Freight Trains were given the 500-series numbers)

I don't know about that shed. Back then there was a lot of talk about renting out the station for other concerns. I seem to recall a hobby shop or snack bar at that end for awhile. The shed looks suspiciously like the shelter at Grimsby for the VIA riders.

Mr Mooney I can totally understand that. I remember first time seeing this I was a little in shock, and I'm sure if I was out there shooting I would've had a small nervous breakdown or something.

Mr Host, thanks for all that. I do follow a few of the groups on Yahoo and they've helped me out in the past. When I first started shooting regularly was back when the NS detours were coming through back in 2011. Unfortunately, I had no clue about those so I missed all of those. Those were the last detours to roll down here and I've since become more prepared for them. Bridge construction was rumored to start at the new year to tie in with canal closure, so they wouldn't have it interfere with any boats coming through but apparently that fell through, if it was actually the case.

Docta, when major reroutes like this occur we're all likely to have a heads up on it - it'll be known well in advance and likely occurs for a good period of time (a few days or a couple weeks).

There's been rumblings of closures at the Welland Canal bridge at St. Kitts requiring CN to use CP for a few weeks or something in the not too distant future.... but this has yet to solidify into a date.

There's been a few events like this over the last 20 years or so, derailments nonwithstanding. The latest was the bridge demolitions in Toronto requiring VIA's to reroute the Halton sub..

:) If you are subscribed to yahoo groups, join c-n-r, c-p-r, fpon and I'm fairly certain you'll be in the loop from those groups.

This is outstanding! To catch a freight on this mileage is amazing already, but a detoured detour train? Must've had a 5 Leaf Clover on ya. (if anyone gets that Futurama reference)

Trust the Smiths to be on the scene. I had forgotten. They're either Flies on the Wall or Rats at the Tracks. LOL I did recall Reggie Button wandering around and this train met another CP, this one eastbound at mile 2.8 with Gordie Rivers as engineer.

He was rolling along and it was a choice of where to catch this train; the bridge or the station. Other (lesser) lashups were caught on the bridge. It has been a long time since it has been "exciting" around there. :o)
